The River Bend Nature Center has been vital to Racine’s history since its establishment in 1973. That year, the Racine Sewerage Commission purchased the 222-acre site and began restoring its native habitats, which had been degraded due to farming activities. The Center has grown since then and includes 385 acres of protected land in addition to its original acquisition. The River Bend Nature Center is home to diverse wildlife and is a favorite spot among birdwatchers. The birds that make their home at RBNC include mallards, egrets, wood ducks, great blue herons, bald eagles, and many more. The Nature Center also provides habitats for reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals, such as red foxes, porcupines, and raccoons. The Nature Center is open for self-guided tours year-round. Some trails wind through the property, providing access to wetlands, prairies, forests, and other habitats. Visitors can also observe the wildlife at the Center’s nature center or take a guided tour led by experienced naturalists. In addition, the Center hosts educational programs, workshops, lectures, and field trips for all ages.  Learn more about Island Park in Racine, Wisconsin: A Paradise for Locals and Visitors.
